We have always been the pet sitter for various family members and friends when they have been away. When Sambuca was a puppy, we would be her sitter quiet often. She was always a lovable little girl. When she was about 2 years old, the “parents” of Sambuca had to give her up because their son’s doctor determined their son was allergic to dogs. We were so eager to become her new “parents”. She was the best dog ever.

She loved to play fetch with tennis balls. We would throw them, hit them with a tennis racquet, throw them in the lake-wherever we sent that ball, Sambuca was sure to go get it! We lovingly called her the “ballaholic”.

Sambuca loved everyone. She was very gracious and accepting of any other pets who came to visit. She also enjoyed visiting others. She went to visit our neighbor quite often. She would go to his door and bark for him to let her in. At other times, she would roam the neighborhood. She often found gatherings happening in the neighborhood. Sambuca would make friends at the barbeque by doing tricks for food. We called her the “Barbeque Queen”.

Sambuca accompanied us on many vacations to the White Mountains but especially to Florida. She visited the Sunshine State at least 13 times. She loved to stretch out in the sun. We always said she was “working on her tan”.

After my father passed away, my Mother was all alone. We rescued Annie from a farm in Maine. She was one of many dogs who spent their life tied to a dog house. Annie was about 2 years old when we brought her home to become my Mother’s companion. Annie had never known what the inside of a human’s house was like-never mind the comforts of it! She adjusted very quickly to lots of attention as well as sleeping on the couch and in a bed. She was such a little love! Annie and Sambuca spent a great deal of time together as we visited often. Sambuca was very tolerant and accepting of Annie. When my Mother passed away, we took Annie to live with us. Sambuca and Annie were now “sisters”.

Annie had the bark of a true hound. It sounded like she was saying “roo”. That became her nickname. We then referred to Sambuca and Annie as Booca and Roo. Thus became “BoocaRoo”.

Annie never played with a ball or any chew toys. She was content to just relax on the couch and just be loved. Booca and Roo loved to sleep aside of each other on the couch, chair or in a bed.

When Annie was 10 years old, we came home one day to find that Annie had passed away. We know that Sambuca missed her as she would look everywhere for her. At the age of 16 years and 11 months, Sambuca passed away in our arms on the day after Thanksgiving. That was 3 months after Annie passed away.

Our house was very quiet and we truly miss our 2 little girls!
